Summary: Take it or leave it
Comment: Whether or not you like this book depends entirely on your ability to tolerate the voice of Franz "the Wiz" Wisner. This memoir covers a two-year trek around the world taken by Wisner (adored by all) and his brother after Wisner is dumped by his fiancée right before his wedding. The two men are true world travelers in that they journey to some of the most remote and exotic locales in the world often as backpackers without guidebooks or set itinerary. The problem I had with this book is that given the depth of their travels, the writing and insights are sophomoric.

The book reads like a high school student articulating his eye-opening experiences after his first trip abroad: "Your best experience will be something spontaneous. Travel is the only investment with guaranteed returns.... ...poverty doesn't equate to unhappiness." Four months spent in Africa constitutes only 32-pages. Perhaps this is because it is the one continent Wisner did not have any sexual conquests to share. Considering these two men are in their thirties, their level of immaturity and self-absorption is astounding. Most of the book served as a platform for Wisner to expound on his many great accomplishments, his list of loyal friends, his sexual prowess, and his personal witty commentary. I continued reading the book in the hopes that Wisner would evolve over the course of his travels, but no.

The second star is because I did actually finish the book and because some of it was amusing--although I think unintentionally so.

Summary: If you liked Eat Pray Love
Comment: . . .you might enjoy this.

Same sort of premise--a big life change precipitates world travel. In Eat Pray Love--a divorce, in this case, a canceled wedding.

Wisner does think a bit about his circumstances, but in general this book is more about the travel than the introspection, which I enjoyed. He does examine the rediscovery of a relationship with his brother, which added a level of personal examination to it.

You could call this the man's Eat Pray Love.

If you dream about the idea of taking a year off and seeing the world, hang out with Franz and his brother for a couple hundred pages.

Summary: Franz lands on his feet here, as always
Comment: A lot of us who reported on former Gov. Pete Wilson's early years in that office in Sacramento remember the author of this book with fondness. He brought a great sense of humor to his job as press secretary. That comes bubbling through here on most every page. The other thing I remember about Franz was how tough and unyielding he could be when he didn't want to answer your questions. You can sense that in this book. All in all, it's a good read. He makes himself sound a little more vulnerable than I suspect he is or ever was. But that is part of the nonfiction "romance" plot and is probably necessary to keep the reader involved. The author is effective in the way he spins out the incidental travel stories that come along as he moves from city to city. I know that's not easy. I hope the book that he hopes to do next sells as well as this one has. As someone who rarely enjoys travel books, and read this one mainly to learn what happened to Franz, I can only give it four stars. But from my "male" perspective, it's worth a lot more of your time than that big selling travel romance about eating in Italy and finding religion and true love in Asia.

Summary: HONEYMOON WITH MY BROTHER
Comment: A very interesting and fun filled book about the travels of a groom jilted at the altar. He picked himself up, took
his brother on the planned honeymoon and learned a lot about life in other parts of the world. It was the greatest experience for him and made him a far better person

Summary: Wonderful book. Loved every chapter.
Comment: I can't rave enough about this book! I was skeptical when I purchased it due to the few negative reviews that appeared on Amazon. I hadn't heard of it before...guess I am a little behind the times on my New York Times Best Sellers "to read list." Franz is a terrific and extremely entertaining writer. His brother Kurt adds so much to the story. Kurt's interactions with the locals could be a book in itself. I highly encourage you to BUY THIS BOOK. You won't be able to put it down. However, if you feel that most men just use women for sex or if you can't handle that fact that a broken-hearted person needs to occasionally vent about it, then look elsewhere. For the rest of us, you'll LOVE this book.

Editorial Reviews:
This is the true story of Franz Wisner, a man who thought he had it all- a high profile career and the fiancée of his dreams- when suddenly, his life turned upside down. Just days before they were to be married, his fiancée called off the wedding. Luckily, his large support network of family and friends wouldn't let him succumb to his misery. They decided Franz should have a wedding and a honeymoon anyway- there just wouldn't be a bride at the ceremony, and Franz' travel companion would be his brother, Kurt.

During the "honeymoon," Franz reconnected with his brother and began to look at his life with newfound perspective. The brothers decided to leave their old lives behind them. They quit their jobs, sold all their possessions, and traveled around the world, visiting fifty-three countries for the next two years. In Honeymoon With My Brother, Franz recounts this remarkable journey, during which he turned his heartbreak into an opportunity to learn about himself, the world, and the brother he hardly knew.
