Customer Rating: Summary: Entertaining and informative guide with misleading title Comment: Having been raised for some time in Japan (where I still occassionally return to visit relatives and friends), I agree and can relate to the information this guide presents. The authors certainly researched the culture of the country present some good insights into what anyone visiting for the first time can and will expect. The prose is also amusing and informative. One caveat to anyone looking into this book. I agree with the other reviewer who says this book is only good for anyone wishing to teach English in Japan. It does NOT provide information on other professions. This is a serious flaw in a book which could have provided valuable material on jobs related to industry, tips for people doing business in Japan. Bottom line: there are certainly many other opportunities for Americans in Japan besides teaching English!
Customer Rating: Summary: A good, no-nonsense introduction Comment: I read this book before I traveled to Japan in 1988, and I found it helpful--encouraging without the sugar coating some guidebooks have. I recommend it to anyone who wants to make a new start living in Japan and working as an English teacher.
Customer Rating: Summary: Only of interest to those interested in teaching English. Comment: I found 'Jobs in Japan' to be very informative and entertaining. It provided me with all I needed to know to land an English teaching job in Japan. In addition to providing an overview of the English teaching job market and how to land a job therein, the book covers everything you'll need to know in order to establish yourself in Japan (e.g., how much money to bring; how to find housing; how to get around the country, etc.). A couple of important caveats: (1) This book focuses almost exclusively on English teaching jobs; don't look to it for information on how to find work in other sorts of jobs/careers. Another book, 'The Job Hunter's Guide to Japan', by Terra Brockman supposedly covers finding employment in other fields but I can't personally vouch for its usefulness. (2) As of the time of this writing 'Jobs in Japan' has been out of print for a while so some of the info may be out of date. I still think it would be useful read - even for someone contemplating work outside of English teaching.
